Valentine’s Day is such a weird and contrived holiday. Even though I feel like a cop-out acknowledging and celebrating such a day I still do it. Valentine’s Day, along with Mother’s Day, Father’s day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthdays, are all holidays that have become socially acceptable. Even if we don’t subscribe to the meaning behind the holiday, they have become a part of our culture. Growing up, I never celebrated Christmas because I was raised in a Jewish household. Every year, even though I was with my loved ones, I felt left out. I think part of the reason why I celebrate all these other holidays, aside from societal pressure, is that it makes me feel included.
Holidays have good intentions (for the most part) but we have become such a varied society that it is impossible to include everyone in every holiday.
