    2016 Reflection

To say it’s been a year of change would be an understatement. This year also happens to be a year of firsts for a lot of things. Let’s make a list!    Things I did this year: Shot 44 Weddings. Weddings took up about half of my year and all my weekends for six months. While lead shooting is certainly preferred, second shooting is fun since it lets me try new things, meet new people, and continue to evolve my craft.   Went to Europe for the first time. This past May, my parents rented an apartment and lived in Paris for the entire month. Of course, we had to…

    Two Days to Denver

Three weeks ago, we set out on our drive to Denver. Leaving at 10pm and driving through the night, we made it to our new apartment in two days, one night. Originally the plan was to have two nights on the road but we were making good time and wanted to just get there. The day we left, we still had a lot to do. The biggest challenge was our couch. Our first couch together…found on the side of the street. I don’t know how we got it into the apartment because getting it out was rough. We were thinking about the possibility of bringing the couch with us but…

    BOS > DEN

We are moving! I still keep wanting to pinch myself to make sure this is real. I don’t know where to begin talking about moving so I’ll start with how we came to this conclusion. Warning: long post, lots of words, thinking out loud.  Work disclaimer: I am still taking weddings for 2017 in Boston and will be flying back and forth next summer as I transition my business from Boston to Denver.  Why Now? It essentially started back when Nick was a 2L in law school and he kicked the idea of transferring to a Colorado law school and finishing his degree there. The seed had been planted but little…

    Fujifilm X-T1 vs Sony a7ii

I’ve been in the market for a small high-end digital camera for a while. I have a Canon 5D mark iii for weddings but carrying that when traveling is tiring and mainly HEAVY. Shooting a wedding is fine because that’s literally why I am there, but carrying it when I’m exploring a new place just feels cumbersome and scary because the 5d is expensive. For the past few days, I had rented out the Sony a7ii with the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 from Borrow Lenses and the Fufjifilm x-T1 with the 23mm f/1.8 from a fellow wedding photographer. I went out a handful of times shooting during the daytime and into…

    More Than Halfway

It’s almost March which means there is a foreseeable end to this dead period that is winter. These past couple months have been really slow. This has its pros and cons. Pros – I can relax, I have time to work on my own projects, I have a lot more time and energy to be social. Cons – I don’t feel like I’m working enough, money is kind of tight, and I have time to sit with myself and freak out about what I’m doing with myself. It’s all about striking a balance. Earlier this month I began planning out my summer/fall with weddings which instantly lifted my mood. Knowing…

    Family Photos

I’m already behind in my New Years Resolutions but I’m trying not to feel too bad about it. This month so far has been a month of reflection. We got back from Texas and the following weekend my brother and his fiancé came to visit from San Francisco. That was really nice because I hadn’t seen my brother since I graduated college, a year and a half ago. While they were visiting I arranged for a photo shoot of the family. Ever since working at the portrait studio, I have been thinking about how I wish I had more photos of my own family. Leading up to the shoot it…

    2016

Happy New Years! Exactly like my post from last year, I am in Texas at Nick’s parent’s house. 2015 was my year of realizing that I want to work for myself and that I like having multiple jobs. I wore many hats this past year which included, wedding photographer, second shooter, photo assistant, digital tech, family photographer, photo editor, and business woman. Since I feel like I’m still trying to figure out what I want to really focus on, I am grateful that I have experienced so many different jobs. On a personal level, this year was great except for the loss of our bunny, Reuben. We got him in…

    Annual Trip to TX

It’s kind of weird to think that this year marks the third year that I’ve (we’ve) gone to Texas for Christmas. Tradition is a weird thing. Everyone grows up with them one way or another and whether they like them or not. I’m realizing that I’m beginning to create my own traditions and while they are predictable and safe, I find myself enjoying that comfort. The first year we went, I was a senior in college and we drove down like we are this year. We both enjoy driving but this year the motivation is more because his inspection sticker needs to get updated and less because we are thrilled…

    It’s Fall!

It’s been a crazy couple months but I’m finally feeling like things are stabilizing. At the end of last month, Reuben died. I’m lucky that this was one of the most devastating things I’ve experienced but that knowledge definitely didn’t help the day of. When I got the news I thought the vet was joking. I left work early and cried the entire rest of the day. That weekend, I had a double-wedding-weekend where I assisted on Friday and then drove to Vermont for a wedding I was shooting as lead. It was a busy weekend which distracted me from the grieving. I think I still am grieving but it’s…

    Thoughts

This past week (more like month) has been so packed with work that only now have I had a chance to sit and relax/catch up on everything. The fact that I’m driving around everywhere doing different things feels like the start to being a freelancer. It isn’t so bad, despite the many complaints I can come up with. I like to keep track of how many miles I drive each month and right now I’m at 1,3000 miles for August. Still got a week and a half of the month left and a trip to VT for a wedding at the end of the month. Maybe I’ll hit 1,400 or…
